Built on a cape, the deep water port of Longoni is located about 15 km north of Mamoudzou. It was inaugurated in 1992, which allowed the island to be opened up. Large cargo ships can be seen there every week unloading imported goods vital for the island's economy. The development of this port area is evolving rapidly, so much so that a second 223-meter long container dock was put into service in January 2010, along with an extension to the container storage area, a gas terminal and a dock for oil tankers. Many companies have come to settle in Longoni, such as Total for fuel storage, Electricité de Mayotte (EDM) has built a production station, etc. It was from this "nerve center" of the island that a strike in 2010 paralyzed the country; the CGT Ma and UTFO unions, among others, obtained an 8.8% increase in the salary scale.
