Stevenson crosses Saint-Martin-de-Fugères one Sunday, at mass time, and describes a crowd of faithful massed in the building. This church, of Romanesque architecture, was built in the 12th century and underwent several renovations, the last one in 1844, 34 years before Stevenson's visit. We can therefore imagine that he saw it as we can see it today, with its imposing granite façade and its four-arched bell tower, reminiscent of that of the church of Le Monastier or the church of Les Salettes.
