Etruscan Caere was a rich commercial city around the 6th century BC. The current name of Cerveteri comes from Caere Vetus (Caere the ancient), name given in the XIII century. It is surrounded by the necropolises of Sorbo, where the famous Regolini-Galassi tomb was discovered, of the Banditaccia, classified on the Unesco world heritage list, and of Monte Abetone. The necropolis of the Banditaccia is about 2 km from the main square. It is one of the most important sites of ancient Etruria, and the largest ancient necropolis in the Mediterranean area. A visit to the archaeological museum is a perfect complement to this Etruscan escapade.
