Built at the beginning of the 20th century, Ostia was integrated into Rome in the 1930s, becoming one of its districts. During the 1960s, it became a city in its own right and is a perfect example of the famous Roman dolce vita , thanks in part to the development of mass beach tourism on its coastline; it is the closest beach to Rome. Note, however, that many Romans prefer to go to the south of Lazio to enjoy the much better quality of sea water. In Ostia, in addition to the public beach mentioned above, there are private beaches for which you must pay an entrance fee in exchange for a beach chair.
