One of the most important collections in Rome. Among the great names presented: Titian, Veronese or Caravaggio. Just that!

Housed in a beautiful seventeenth-century mansion, built to house its collections, the Borghese Gallery is one of the most important in Rome. Intended by Cardinal Scipione Borghese (1579-1633), its collections suffered a disastrous amputation in 1807 when 154 statues, 160 busts, 170 bas-reliefs and 30 columns were sold to Napoleon by Camille Borghese, husband of Pauline Bonaparte.

Because of the short visit time (2 hours), we suggest you to do the visit in reverse: go directly to the2nd floor and start with the XX room.

2nd floor (the art gallery). To see especially:

Room XX. Sacred Love and Profane Love and Saint Dominic by Titian, Portrait of a Man by Antonello Da Messina, Sacred Conversation with Saint Barbara and Saint Justina and Two Faithful by Palma il Vecchio, Madonna and Child by Giovanni Bellini, Sermon of Baptist by Veronese.

Room XIX. Danae by Correggio and Judith by Pordenone.

Room XVIII. Susanna and the Elders by Rubens.

Room XVII. Venus and Adonis, Christ on the road to Emmaus, Diana and Endymion, Jesus at the Pharisee by Scarsellino.

Room XV. The Fall of Lucifer by Palma il Giovane, as well as the Last Supper, The Holy Trinity, Adoration of the Kings by Lacopo Bassano.

Room XIV. Joseph and the Woman of Putiphar by Giovanni Lanfranco and, above all, several masterpieces by Caravaggio: St. Jerome, Young Bacchus Sick, John the Baptist in the Desert, Young Man with a Basket of Fruit, David with the Head of Goliath, Madonna of the Grooms.

Room XIII. Virgin and Child and St. John by Giulio Romano.

Room XII. Smiling Youth by Annibal Carracci and The Sibyl by Dominiquin.

Room XI. Sacred conversation and Self-portrait by Lorenzo Lotto.

Room X. Holy Family and St. John the Younger by Rosso Fiorentino, Madonna and Child and St. John by Andrea del Sarto, Portrait of a Young Man by Ghirlandaio.

Room IX. Madonna and Child, Saint John and Angels by Sandro Botticelli, as well as the Deposition, Portrait of a Man, Lady with Unicorn by Raphael and Madonna and Child by Perugino.

1st floor. The sculptures.

To see: Canova's Venus Victrix, and Bernini's David, Apollo and Daphne and The Abduction of Persephone.

Incontournable
