Located in the volcanic Meygal massif, Saint-Julien-Chapteuil was born from the union of 2 localities. Originally, the population was settled around the south of Chapteuil. Once Saint-Julien was chosen as the administrative center of the canton, the small village grew. At the request of the lords, it acquired an exceptional religious heritage. Later, notable families turned it into a remarkable village. At an altitude of 1,750 m, the Meygal state forest is ideal for beautiful walks, and boasts some 100 km of perfectly groomed and signposted cross-country ski trails, considered to be one of the largest Nordic ski areas in Auvergne.
