The small, clean centre of São Vicente is set back from the sea by a good kilometre. The village is dominated by the chapel of São Roque, built in 1692 on a rocky peak to protect itself from pirates and the tide. The museum on volcanism installed in the caves of São Vicente attracts tourists. In reality, São Vicente is made up of three parts: the high part with the church towering over the valley, on the other side the old part made of pedestrian alleys, and finally the low part, located on the seafront immediately against the cliff. São Vicente is said to be one of the favorite corners of the French on the island!
