Calheta is a block of houses with a tourist vocation, as well as the only blond sand beach in Madeira (imported from Morocco!). Behind a large concrete promenade, a spit of water is held back by a concrete dike . On either side, two symmetrical beaches face each other (it feels like you're in a swimming pool, since you're swimming in front of the people on the opposite shore, not facing the sea). On weekends, the Madeira Islanders lay siege to the place. But Calheta is soulless, to say the least. However, don't miss its museum of contemporary art; not to mention its distillery that makes rum and cane syrup
