Ponta do Sol is not just another fishing village. It is agriculture that has always been lived here, as evidenced by the remains of the Solar dos Esmeraldos. This palace was built in the 16th century by João Esmeraldo, one of the first sugar fortunes in Madeira. In Lombada da Ponta Do Sol, take a tour inside the Espírito Santo Chapel built by the same Esmeraldo and admire its beautiful azulejos dating back to the Baroque period. Founded in 1486, the Matriz Nossa Senhora da Luz church has a Mudejar roof structure and a unique green ceramic vat from Seville. It is noteworthy that the grandparents of the American novelist John Dos Passos lived in the village
