The name of the capital of the country is that of a French knight of the order of Malta, Jean Parisot de la Valette, who is responsible for building the fortifications of the city. The Maltese often call it "The City". With its 6,700 inhabitants, La Valette is the smallest European capital, while being the island's commercial and financial heart. But it is above all for the charm of its old town - and its almost legendary history - that makes its reputation and awarded it its ranking to the heritage of humanity by Unesco in 1980 (see box). The "inhabited city" appears as a great living museum where past and present blend. The wind engages in the streets creating a mild climate and a pleasant atmosphere. Then it's time to go to Upper Barracca Gardens. The view of the Grand Port is magnificent. You can sit there for hours to contemplate it or watch people, Maltese, lovers and tourists also enjoy it. Ancient Aboriginal people discuss and identify the last boats arriving to know which language will be spoken in Republic Street the following day.The animation of the center itself depends on tourists. You will sometimes be the only actors in the afternoons of hot summers. Nightlife tends to grow slowly and its status as European Capital of Culture in 2018 has helped boost its animation. And also to reinforce the constructive and renewing fever that has gripped the city, as well as the island.
