Opinions differ on the origin of the name of this pretty village. Is it a reference to the prophet Elijah? Or a derivative of an Arabic word evoking the olive and orange trees that have long made the place famous? Of the three practically contiguous villages of Attard, Balzan and Lija, the latter, having undergone less development, is the best preserved. The church of St. Saviour, whose dome was one of the first to be built in Malta, is worth a visit. Lija is also known for its fireworks which attract thousands of Maltese and tourists during its festa which takes place in the first week of August, regularly winning prizes in competitions
