AGIOS PHILON CHURCH

This ^11th-12th century Byzantine church (Ayios Philon Kilisesi, Ναός του Aγίου Φίλωνος/Naos tou Agiou Philonos) enjoys a beautiful seaside setting, above the superb Agios Philon/Ayfilon beach and next to the Oasis at Ayfilon hotel. Partly in ruins, it preserves the remains of a clay sarcophagus believed to belong to St. Philo, bishop of Karpasia in the ^4th century. Some remains of the city's ancient basilica, destroyed by the Arabs in 802, can be seen nearby (mosaics, column bases, baptismal font, etc.).
