There are three places to visit here. On the coast are the superb remains of the city of Salamis on Cyprus, so named to avoid confusion with the Greek island of Salamis, where a famous naval battle took place against the Persians. And, just ahead, coming from Famagusta, the prestigious monastery dedicated to Saint Barnabas and the "royal" tombs lie inland. Start early with the archaeological site, to avoid the hot hours and groups of tourists. Then, when the sun really beats down, take refuge in the monastery, which has a shaded café. Salamis is also about beaches: stretches of sand bordered by dunes, pine forests and large tourist complexes.
