Famagusta is one of the most beautiful cities in Cyprus. Surrounded by ramparts built by the Lusignans and Venetians, the old town is home to countless medieval churches. Most of these remain in ruins since the terrible Ottoman siege of 1570-1571. But the largest, the former Saint-Nicolas cathedral, now the Lala-Mustafa-Pacha mosque, retains its admirable Gothic architecture, reminiscent of Reims cathedral. Yet this strange, romantic setting attracts few tourists compared to Kyrenia. Mainly populated by Greek Cypriots in 1974, Famagusta was Cyprus' largest seaside resort before the Turkish invasion. All that remains are the empty hotels of the "ghost town" of Varosha, along a superb beach reopened to the public in 2020.
