At an altitude of 1,200 metres, Platres enjoys a superb setting, with forests, orchards and plunging views of the coast. Sung by the Greek poet Georges Séféris (1900-1971), from 1879 this village was the preferred summer resort of the Middle Eastern elite. Today, it has lost some of its splendor: as tourism has developed on the shore, Platres appears neglected, with its small, faded hotels along the main street. It's in Spyrou-Kyprianou and Aidonion ("the nightingales", dear to Séféris) that the soul of the village is hidden. From the Roksanis-Koudounaris fountain (1936), where water flows down from Mount Olympus, to the mythical Park Forest Hotel, it's an enchantment: wise little brick houses with meticulous decor emerge along the road between the pines, with here and there extravagant abandoned hotels and huge villas adorned with surveillance cameras. It's the atmosphere of a detective story that you'll discover on foot, taking you back to the Roaring Twenties that inspired English novelist Daphne du Maurier.
