Although Limassol is only the second-largest city in Cyprus, after Nicosia, in terms of population it is the most dynamic and cosmopolitan. Its beach-lined seafront is home to high-rise modern buildings. It also boasts a gleaming marina designed to accommodate the yachts (and dirty money) of Russian oligarchs. Since the 1990s, the city has attracted many Russians, Belarusians and Ukrainians. Nicknamed "Little Moscow", 17% of the city's inhabitants are from the former USSR, along with large minorities from Asia, Africa and the Balkans. Limassol's power of attraction stems from the capture of Famagusta by the Turkish army in 1974, when it suddenly became the country's leading port. The city grew fast. Wedged between the remains of the ancient cities of Kourion (to the west) and Amathonte (to the northeast), its suburbs extend as far as the British territory of Akrotiri (to the southwest) and the foothills of the Troodos (to the north). The small town center is nonetheless pleasant, with a medieval castle, an old Turkish quarter and old warehouses housing museums and restaurants.
