Thanks to its soil rich in limestone, copper and coal, the Kalavasos region has been developed since Neolithic times. The important archaeological site of Tenta-Kalavasos bears witness to this. The village itself became a mining center in the 20th century. Today, Kalavasos is oriented towards agri-tourism, with its traditional houses renovated by the Cyprus Villages organization to welcome tourists. The small center is pleasant with its cobbled streets, café terraces and white houses. The village stretches along the Vasiliko valley, where a narrow-gauge railway line used to transport ore to the port of Vasilikos, near Zygi. It ceased to operate in the 1960s, when most of the mines closed. It was also at this time, in 1967, that the last Turkish Cypriot inhabitants left, their community having previously represented 20% of the population. Of this past, a well-restored 19th-century mosque and a municipal garden with a reconstructed old train on a bridge remain. The surrounding area is lush and green, particularly on the way to the Kalavasos artificial lake and its dam built in 1985 (5 km to the north), near which there is an old copper mine.
