Yosemite Valley (pronounced Yosemiti), one of America's tourist hotspots, is one of the most impressive examples of a valley carved out by a glacier. Completely enclosed, the Yosemite Valley can be explored on foot, by bike or by shuttle bus (21 stops in the valley, free of charge). It is 13 km long and 1.6 km wide, at a height of 1,209 metres. From the valley floor, you can see the steep walls and the two rocks so often photographed for their beauty: El Capitan and the Cathedral. From the top of the walls fall countless impressive waterfalls, some over 700 metres high. Numerous hikes leave from the valley's surroundings. It's crowded in summer.A little further on, you'll find vast forests of centuries-old redwoods. Although the park is huge, covering more than 300,000 hectares, most tourists end up in the same places (in Yosemite Valley), so Yosemite seems very crowded, especially in summer. Prefer spring or autumn to avoid problems obtaining permits.
