Then considered dormant, Lassen Peak volcano became active in May 1914, beginning a seven-year period of periodic eruptions. The area became a national park in 1916, due to the extent of its activity. Today, although the volcano is no longer active, it could still erupt at any time; in the meantime, the park that shelters it offers impressive scenery. For example, the Devastated Area, an ancient forest ravaged by eruptions in the early 20th century, is a desolate landscape. More than a century later, a few plant organisms are gradually beginning to grow on this hostile, grey land.
