Magnificent views of the jagged Pacific Ocean coastline point to the Point Reyes Peninsula, about 60 miles north of San Francisco. It was here that the English explorer Sir Francis Drake ran aground in 1579 to repair his damaged ship. In reference to its white cliffs, he named the place "New Albion". Eventually, the territory became Spanish and was named Point Reyes in 1603, in honor of the kings.Today, American tourists flock here to commune with nature. Do as they do: put on your walking shoes and don't forget a hat, sweater or jacket, as the place is extremely windy. Don't miss the Point Reyes Lighthouse, a lighthouse with 300 steps that provide access to a sublime view.
