Magnificent views of the indented Pacific Ocean coastline point to the Point Reyes peninsula, some 60 km north of San Francisco. It was here that English explorer Sir Francis Drake ran aground in 1579 to repair his damaged ship. In reference to its white cliffs, he christened the place "New Albion". Eventually, the territory became Spanish and was named Point Reyes in 1603, in tribute to the kings.Today, American tourists flock here to commune with nature. Do as they do: put on your hiking boots and don't forget a hat, sweater or jacket, as the area is extremely windy. Don't miss Point Reyes Lighthouse, with its 300 steps leading up to a sublime view.
