The Carmelite mission created in 1771 gave its name to the city. At the beginning of the 20th century, a community of artists settled in small wooden cabins. The great earthquake of 1906 in San Francisco pushed even more poets, painters and writers to settle here. This bohemian life did not last long with the rise in real estate prices. Today, everything is perfect, clean and beautiful in a very private club atmosphere: city of billionaires, many celebrities and big industrialists have a property here, such as Clint Eastwoood who was the mayor of the city in the 80s. Many art galleries and festivals.
