The Carmelite mission, founded in 1771, gave its name to the town. In the early 20th century, a community of artists settled in small wooden cabins. The great San Francisco earthquake of 1906 prompted even more poets, painters and writers to settle here. This bohemian lifestyle didn't last long, however, as real estate prices began to rise. Today, everything is perfect, clean and beautiful in a very private club atmosphere: a city of billionaires, many celebrities and industrialists own property here, such as Clint Eastwood, who was the city's mayor in the 80s. Lots of art galleries and festivals.
