Monterey was the capital of Mexican California until 1846 when it was taken by the U.S. Army. The city then became an important fishing port until the middle of the 20th century. In addition to its aquarium, Monterey also attracts crowds for its world-famous jazz festival, which takes place in September and celebrated its 65th edition in 2022. People also come to stroll Fisherman's Wharf and Cannery Row, both of which are overflowing with restaurants, bars and hotels where tourists like to come to relax and eat fried seafood after watching the whales migrate off the harbor.
