Leaving Santa Cruz, you also leave behind the picturesque landscapes of the coast. The road to Monterey runs inland, through the agricultural fields that inspired John Steinbeck. You'll pass through Castroville, capital of the artichoke, and Watsonville, land of the strawberry. 80% of the lettuce produced in the USA also comes from this valley, so you're really in California's attic. Steinbeck fans will want to stop off in Salinas, his birthplace, where you can visit his house and museum. A literary stopover, in fact, before moving on to the more interesting coastal towns of Monterey and Carmel.
