The charming little town of Half Moon Bay, with a population of around 10,000, receives several million visitors a year, especially at weekends. This immense beach of fine sand traces a yellow crescent on the coast. Wind-beaten and solitary, it comes alive on sunny days when the breeze and fog calm down. Locals walk their dogs and children fly kites. On the northern tip is Moss Beach Distillery, which dates back to 1927. During Prohibition, cargo ships loaded with prohibited liquors and spirits took advantage of the fog to deliver their clandestine cargoes. The restaurants and inns set up there were the best-stocked in the region. Further south lies Princeton-by-the-sea on Pillar Point Harbor. Facing the raging ocean, enjoy a cold beer on the patio of the Half Moon Bay Brewing Company on sunny days, or by the fire on stormy days. This is also where you'll find the world-famous Mavericks surf spot.
