The first stop on the north coast, on the other side of the Golden Gate Bridge, Sausalito is a quiet little town often compared to Saint-Tropez, a sort of Mediterranean fishing port with an American twist.But in the days of Prohibition, Sausalito was a village of bars, gambling dens and brothels. In the 1940s, with the creation of shipyards, Sausalito's character changed. From then on, a distinction was made between uptown and downtown. Down below were the Wharf Rats. Upstairs, the beautiful Victorian homes and vacation properties of the Hill Snobs. Harbour Rats " and " Hill Snobs " for a small town! A bygone era. In the 1960s, bohemian artists took over the houseboats, floating homes with a wild charm.Today, boats have taken possession of this charming spot, facing the bay and backing onto the ocean. A yachting center, a marina, elegant wooden houses, art galleries, trendy boutiques, restaurants and cafés are all part and parcel of this pretty little town.For movie lovers: along Bridgeway, the town's main thoroughfare, at the intersection with Richardson Street, a restaurant built in 1893. It was then called the Walhalla. It was here, in 1940, that Orson Welles' film The Lady from Shanghai was shot, with the director-actor and the beautiful Rita Hayworth in the lead roles.Visitor Center. You'll learn all about this pretty town known for its Victorian houses, floating homes, luxury hotels and pretty marina. If you'd like to hop on a sailboat and take a tour of San Francisco Bay, this is a great place to start.
