The official capital of Silicon Valley, located 90 km from San Francisco, San Jose is the largest city in the Bay Area, serving as the gateway to the famous valley. It has the third-largest population in California, with just over one million inhabitants. Historically, it is also California's first city, founded on November 29, 1777. San José is located near the San Andreas Fault and is therefore exposed to seismic activity. The largest earthquake to hit the city was in 1906, which destroyed many of the city's buildings, but there were a dozen more between 1939 and 1989. Moreover, the city lies close to several faults, and one day the earth may open up beneath the feet of its inhabitants!Today, it is home to the headquarters of IT giants such as Adobe, eBay and PayPal. But there's not much to do in San Jose, especially at weekends, apart from visit the Winchester Mystery House and the Tech Museum of Innovation.Festivals. During the summer, the city attracts more visitors thanks to numerous festivals, celebrating the region's different communities (Greek Festival, Portugal Day in June...), but also its musical culture (Foutain Blues Festival at the end of June, Island Reggae Festival in July, Summer Fest in July...) and culinary culture (Taco Festival in May, Tamales Festival in August, Bacon Festival in September).
