Oakland, with its 400,000 inhabitants, is not just a dormitory town annexed to San Francisco. Much less expensive than its big sister, and very pleasant, it has some nice surprises in store for those who take the time to cross the Bay Bridge to discover it, particularly on its main shopping streets: Grand Avenue, Broadway and Telegraph Avenue. Fans of early 20th-century architecture will be delighted: the city abounds in magnificent buildings in varying states of preservation. It was the birthplace of Jack London, who spent much of his life here. In Jack London Square, on the harbor, the First and Last Chance Saloon still exists and preserves the writer's work table.Long plagued by poverty, Oakland has a reputation as a dangerous city (take precautions at night). But the city is now emerging from this slump. Faced with the dizzying price hikes in San Francisco, more and more hipsters are moving in, creating a friendly neighborhood life on many streets. The relocation of Uber's headquarters to the city is also a fine symbol of this. Pixar Studios are just ten minutes from downtown, contributing to this creative emulation.Tourist Office (Oakland Convention Bureau and Venter; Jack London Square; +1 510 839 9000; www.visitoakland.org). Open Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., it's a must-see on the city's main square. The tourist office's website also features a fine selection of hotels, restaurants and nightlife in the city.
