GOLDEN GATE PARK
San Francisco's Golden Gate Park is one of the largest urban parks in the United States, ahead of New York's Central Park.
Large rectangle of more than 4 km2, the Golden Gate Park is one of the largest urban parks in the United States, ahead of New York's Central Park to which it is often compared. Perpendicular to the ocean, its construction was launched in the 1870s. The pleasures and possibilities cannot be exhausted in a single visit or in a single day. San Franciscans like to come here to walk, bike, skate, ride horses (on Sundays, Kennedy Drive is closed to automobile traffic). People also come here for the many activities offered: a polo stadium, a golf course, tennis courts, etc. Golden Gate Park is also home to the major museums, the De Young Museum and the California Academy of Sciences. The immense arboretum and the Conservatory of Flowers will delight botany lovers while dreamers and poets can bask in the small garden dedicated to Shakespeare. Finally, the Japanese Tea Garden celebrates the reconciliation of the United States with Japan and the Japanese-Americans who suffered discrimination during the Second World War. And let's not forget to remember the thousands of hippies who flocked to Golden Gate Park during the 1967 Summer of Love to attend free Grateful Dead concerts and to imagine a better world together by trying free love and psychedelic travel. A must for any stay in San Francisco.
