The Franciscan version of the carnival was launched in 1979. Today it runs through the Mission District for two days from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on the last weekend in March, celebrating Latin American and Caribbean arts and traditions. The event is produced by Mission Neighborhood Centers and raises funds for charities dedicated to children, families and the elderly. It is also an opportunity to elect the King and Queen of Carnival! The De Young Museum hosts the kick-off party in the week leading up to the event.
