Inhabited by 1,850 souls, Bluff is the port of Invercargill (which is 30 kilometers to the north) and is the departure point for Stewart Island/Rakiura. Also known as the terminus of the State Highway SH1 and also the terminus of the great North/South Te Araroa walking tour, "The town where the highway begins " was one of the first settlement sites in the country, exploited as early as 1824 by whalers. The town was first named Campbelltown, before taking its current name in 1917, which means "promontory". Two economic activities give rhythm to the local activity: the production of aluminum and oysters.
