Founded in 1856 by Scottish settlers, Invercargill is the southernmost town in New Zealand and one of the southernmost in the world. With a population of 50,000, it is located on the estuary of the Waihopai River, at the end of a plain where sheep farming is highly developed. Invercargill is often just a stopover for those heading to Stewart Island or the Catlins, with little to do other than meet Henry at the museum next to Queen's Park, one of the oldest tuatara, or follow in Burt Munro's footsteps at Oreti Beach, an impressive open road. Invercargill is not a tourist destination per se, but it is a great place to stay because of the friendliness of its people.
