Bathed by the waters of the superb lake of the same name, Te Anau is the gateway to Fiordland National Park and its famous Milford Sound. Straddling the jagged silhouette of the mountains to the west and the vast, rolling, agricultural landscape to the east, Te Anau is a small, tourist-oriented town of 1,900 inhabitants. If it's quickly deserted in winter, it's always busy in summer. There's plenty of accommodation and a few good places to grab a drink or a bite to eat, so it's best to book your stay in advance.
