Dunedin is the South Island's second-largest city and the country's seventh-largest metropolitan area. Under the name of Otepoti, it was the site of inter-tribal wars. In 1848, the first permanent settlers arrived, 344 Scots from the Free Church of Scotland. The town was to have been called " New Edinburgh ", but in the end its Gaelic name, Dùn Èideann, was chosen. Many streets were named after the Scottish capital. Development was slow, but accelerated with the discovery of gold. Today, the city is elegant and youthful, thanks to its student population.
