Built on the north bank of the Hokitika River, Hokitika owes its existence to the building euphoria of the gold rush. First visited in 1847 by the two local explorers Brunner and Heaphy, the first settlers arrived in 1865. Its port was crowded with ships carrying all kinds of goods paid for by the precious metal. Today, it's a place to visit for its incredible lifestyle, its arts, its beautiful scenery and its enchanting beach, on which wooden sticks are arranged to form the letters of the town.
