At the end of State Highway 67, 50 km north of Wesport, Karamea is the last real village on the west coast and in the Buller district, with a population of 360. The area is beautiful, and its main attraction lies in its immediate proximity to Kahurangi National Park, a vast, almost inaccessible wilderness. The area is best known for being one of the two ends of the Heaphy Track, one of the 11 Great Walks. But also the superb Oparara Valley, which can be reached by pushing a little further north.
