Opened in 1966, the South Canterbury Museum tells the natural and social history of the South Canterbury region. The first Polynesian inhabitants are of course presented and the pioneers are also discussed, with a collection of objects dating from this period such as artifacts and iconographic documents. Temporary exhibitions are held throughout the year. Others are permanent and follow an educational and research program. It is a public museum dependent on the Council which has the merit of being free.
