At the foot of Port Hills, Lyttelton, which was named after Lord Lyttelton, president of the Canterbury Association, is the port serving Christchurch, 12 km away. The main road on the South Island starts from Bluff (all south of the island) to Lyttelton. Prior to the development of air transport, the Interislander Ferry connected Lyttelton to Wellington. The first Europeans arrived in Lyttelton, Gravirent Port Hills, and settled on the current site of Christchurch. The port route to the port was completed in 1857, when it was decided to dig a tunnel. Its 2,4 km demanded 6 years of work and compensated nearly £ 195 000. This is the first tunnel dug through a volcanic crater.
