Located in the southeast of the Golden Bay, Takaka is a village founded in 1854 that developed thanks to the exploitation of marble and the discovery of precious metals. It is now the main town of the Golden Bay with a little more than 1,400 inhabitants. Known for its alternative lifestyles that attract many artists, the winding roads that lead to it offer beautiful scenery and views. If you're planning to go further north for hiking, Takaka is the last stop for proper shopping. Don't miss the Te Waikoropupū Springs, among the largest freshwater springs in the country!
