Named after Admiral Nelson (with a main street named Trafalgar Street; there's a hint of animosity towards the French!), Nelson is a popular destination because of its centrality: not far from the West Coast, and halfway between Nelson Lakes National Park and the beaches of Golden Bay and Abel Tasman, it's an excellent base for exploring some of New Zealand's most famous spots. It's also one of the sunniest cities in the country, with an average of more than 2,400 hours of sunshine per year. A pleasant destination where it is worth spending a few days.
