Paraparaumu and its beach are an ideal base for an expedition to Kapiti Island, the major attraction of the region. It is the main town of the Kapiti Coast and one of the growing urban areas of the region. Because of its proximity to Wellington via the train line, it is seen as a good base for city workers In Māori Parapara means "pieces" or "land", and umu means "earthen oven". Paraparaumu therefore means "pieces of an earthen oven". This would come from warriors who, starving and having taken the city, found only a few scraps of food in the ovens for food.
