Created in 1986, this 74,231-hectare park boasts a number of wonders, including the Whanganui River. Easy to access, it was first used by the Māori before Europeans began exploiting it. Its waters run for 290 km and flow into 239 rapids before reaching the Tasman Sea. Its most famous landmark is the Bridge to Nowhere, a 1936 concrete bridge leading literally nowhere. Originally, it was intended to be the only link between the valley and the rest of the region. But the government never completed the promised road. The Kaiwhakauka track - the Whanganui Journey are very popular.
