Jerusalem was once a large Māori village known as Patiarero. In 1892, the Frenchwoman Suzanne Aubert founded there, after having already established a Catholic mission, a school, an orphanage and a farm, the first religious order in New Zealand: the congregation of Our Lady of Compassion, which became a highly respected order of care and religious order. Suzanne Aubert (who took the name Sister Marie-Joseph or Mother Aubert) was responsible for the church and convent that can still be seen today. The convent offers accommodation for visitors who wish to stay in the area (+64 6 342 8190, [email protected]).
