New Plymouth (Ngāmotu in Māori) is not usually a town to stop in, unless you want to have a city base to go explore Taranaki National Park Founded in 1841 by the New Zealand Company, the Māori were enjoying its area long before the Europeans arrived Its airy, gridded streets slope down to the (lovely) waterfront, and the road to get here is an adventure in itself, even more so if you're coming from the north on the Forgotten World Highway! Surfers love the area and visitors too often forget this extremely attractive corner of the North Island
