Located a 4-hour drive from Wellington and 25 minutes from Napier, Havelock North is a small town renowned for its restaurants, galleries, honey production and Te Mata Peak, which has a legend about the love affair between Te Mata and Hinerākau. The hill is said to be the prostrate body of Te Mata, who had to prove his love for Hinerakau to the villagers. The outline of his body forms the horizon, with his feet to the north and his head to the south. Even Europeans agreed on its resemblance to a reclining man, calling it "the sleeping giant". At certain sunsets, a mist representing Hinerakau can be seen covering her deceased lover.
