The beautiful and elegant Napier is the most charming city in the region and is a must for all architecture lovers. On February 3, 1931, at 10:47 am, the town was destroyed by a terrible earthquake measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale. The ground was raised by more than two meters in some places, and 3,600 hectares of swamps were drained. Rebuilt in an Art Deco style giving it its own identity, Napier is today one of the most characterful cities in New Zealand. The good life is real here and it is a perfect base for visiting sunny Hawke's Bay.
