A small town with a population of 1,080, Ohakune is, along with Turangi, one of the two ideal bases for planning a trip to Tongariro National Park. At the foot of Mount Ruapehu, it is a destination of choice for skiers, who come to enjoy the slopes of the south face. In the summer, it is a great place for hiking and biking The local iwi says that the name Ohakune comes from the phrase He Ohakune ki te ao, which could be roughly translated as An opening to a new world. This would refer to the change in landscape between the highlands of Mount Ruapehu and the valley and marshland at lower elevations in Ohakune.
