Located a few kilometers north of Taupo, Wairakei is based on the volcanic fault that runs from Mount Ruapehu to White Island, one of New Zealand's most active volcanoes. This small village between Rotorua and Taupo became a tourist attraction in the 1880s, when a certain Robert Graham built a hotel here. At the time, the geothermal power station was the second of its kind in the world. Crater of the Moon is the country's largest geothermal field, covering an area of 25 km². A short, one-hour walk will take you there and allow you to enjoy this unique landscape for just a few dollars.
