With a population of 6,400, Whitianga is the main town on the eastern side of the peninsula. It boasts a beautiful waterfront and magnificent surroundings, including the Northern Mountains, Hot Water Beach and Cathedral Cove. Mercury Bay, on which it sits, was named in 1769 by Captain Cook. At a time of intensive exploitation of native forests, the town was an important kauri export port. It is one of the most beautiful areas in the region and a prime base for exploration. Now a thriving fishing and tourist destination. In September, the Scallop Festival is held.ISITE 8:30am-4pm, 12pm on Saturdays.
